Putnam enlisted in the Fifth Regiment New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry,Co.B at age 28 yrs.

Putnam died from chronic cough and lung diease, the result of spending three rainy days while wounded in the Antietam battle field.. He also had a bad leg due to wounds he received in the battles of Antietam on 17 Sept 1862 and Gettysburg on 2 July 1863.
