"Bub" was born in Gallipolis, Ohio, the eldest of nine children born to William Winfred "Fred" and his wife Willie George "Billie" Spencer Foster. He grew up in the Gallipolis area, attending Gallia Academy and helping his father with chores on the farm and with managing the dairy. His death on Easter Sunday at the end of the war, when an American tank struck his motorcycle in the town of Nancy, France, broke his parents' hearts; he is buried between their graves under a large tree in Mound Hill Cemetery that his littlest brother John Foster planted. Two little sisters died in infancy, but he left three sisters and three brothers all of whom married and left a host of great-nephews and great-nieces who would learn of Uncle Bub so his memory will be kept alive.
