Actress. Born Jean Hodgkinson, she was best known for her roles as Hilda Ogden on the British soap opera "Coronation Street" from 1964 to 1987 and Auntie Wainwright on the long-running sitcom "Last of the Summer Wine" from 1988 to 2010. She started as a library assistant before beginning her acting career in 1949 at the Adelphi Guild Theatre in Macclesfield. She would continue working in the theater before getting her start in television, appearing on the series "Deadline Midnight" in 1961. Three years later she started on the series "Coronation Street" in the role of Hilda Ogden. She would remain in this role for 24 years and it made her an iconic star on British television. After leaving the show in 1987, she would go on to the sitcom "Last of the Summer Wine" where she played the role of Auntie Wainwright, another well-known role for her. She remained in this role until 2010. Her other credits included "Emergency-Ward 10," "Z Cars," "Badger's Bend," "Rich Tea and Sympathy," and "Barbara." She also appeared in such films as "Scandal" and "Willie's War."
