Candler - Thomas Samuel Schutte, 87, passed away Tuesday November 24, 2009 at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals.

Born in Denver Colorado, he had lived in Buncombe County since 1963. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII having served in the South Pacific. He retired from Asheville High School in 1989 after 20 years as a teacher. After retiring he volunteered for 13 years at the Buncombe County Detention Center. He was a member of Mount Pisgah Academy Seventh Day Adventist Church.

He was a son of the late Frederick and Elsie Schutte and was also preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Schutte who was killed in the Battle of the Bulge in 1944 and a sister, Dorothy Doss.

Surviving are his wife, Mildred Schutte of the home; son, T. Samuel Schutte and wife Connie of Oklahoma City, OK; daughters, Karen Schutte of the home and Tootie Mrotek and husband Dusty of Bowie, MD; brothers, Leslie Schutte and wife Lottie of Apopka, FL and Dr. Harold Schutte and wife Margie of Weaverville; sisters, Bobbie Jenson of Newnan, GA. and Gloria Bareford and husband Ed of Richmond, VA; seven grandchildren, Tad and Calvin Schutte, Ginger Manning, April Dunbar and Nicholas, Heather and Billy Blackmon; nine great grandchildren and several beloved nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Pastor Buz Menhardt officiating. Burial will be in Green Hills Cemetery.
