In the early 1700's there were serious taxation issues between Maryland and Pennsylvania authorities regarding which colony owned the West Nottingham Tax district. Attempted double taxation caused much discomfort to these West Nottingham residences. So the Allred and other families left West Nottingham, Chester County Pennsylvania in the 1730 time frame. These families no doubt took the Great Wagon Road from Philadelphia westward through Lancaster and York Pennsylvania into an area where the road forded the Potomac River going to Winchester, Virginia. Some families settled in the western section of Fredrick County, Maryland near the Potomac River. Other families settled across the Potomac River in Frederick County Virginia. Most likely John ALLRED and his future wife were neighbors and were both born in the troubled West Nottingham Tax district or the adjoining Cecil County Maryland before their families left Chester County. It is suggested that John "Johnny" ALLRED and his single ALLRED mother left Chester County shortly after his birth. Likewise it is likely his future wife and her family left Chester County, Pennsylvania or the adjoining Cecil County Maryland area around 1730.

Very little is known about the wife of John ALLRED. Her maiden name is believed to be JULIAN from nearby Cecil County, Maryland. The ALLRED families lived in Chester County, Pennsylvania adjacent to Cecil County, Maryland the home of the JULIAN Families. It is logical to imagine theses two families became acquaintances and friends. John ALLRED and Lydia JULIAN were perhaps married in 1746 as teenagers and longtime friends based on their ages and homes. John and his beloved wife Lydia were the parents to nine children.

It is thought their first child may have been born in York County, Pennsylvania as theses families migrated west to escape the taxation turmoil of Chester County. It is believed the second and third children were born in Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia before their families migrated down the Great Wagon Road into Colonial Orange (now Randolph) County, North Carolina by 1755. It is more likely their first two children were born in Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia before their families migrated down the Great Wagon Road into Colonial Orange (now Randolph) County, North Carolina. They had eight daughters and one son. Lydia most likely died from complications at the birth with their ninth child in 1770. In honor and respect for the mothers tragedy it is suggested that the new child was named Lydia after her mother. Therefore it is reasonable to identify Lydia ALLRED with Lydia JULIAN.

The nine children of Lydia JULIAN and John ALLRED are:

1. Elizabeth ALLRED, b. 1747; d. 1823; m. William HORNER, b. 1746; d. 1824.

2. Catherine ALLRED, b. 1749; d. 1842; m1. John MADDEN, b. 1747; d.1768; m2. Rene JULIAN, b. 1746; d. 1840.

3. Mary ALLRED, b. 1753; d. aft 1792.

4. John ALLRED, b. 1759; d. 1815; m. Lillie Ann JULIAN, b. 1758;d.1810.

9. Lydia ALLRED, b. 1770; d. 1850 -1873.

John ALLRED age 43 married a second time in 1771 in Colonial Guilford (now Randolph) County, North Carolina to Margaret JULIAN age 29.

The three children of John ALLRED and his second wife Margaret JULIAN: are:

1. Joseph ALLRED, b. 1772; d. 1856; m. Rachael TROGDON, b. 1773; d. 1864

Note: These proposed scenarios are based on my own research combined with the superb research of fellow genealogist Darnell Hatton Griffin in her excellent book, "From England to America our Allred Family", pp 131-146.Revolutionary War Patriotic Service, North Carolina, Paid for Services Rendered. Born before 1726, place unknown; died before Dec 1792 in Randolph County, North Carolina.
