Richard Warren Thompson, Jr. 66, of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away on October 17th, 2016 after a brief illness at Northside Hospital - Cherokee.

Richard was born in Haralson, GA on October 28, 1949 to the late Pauline and Richard Thompson, Sr. He graduated from High School in Coweta County and volunteered to serve in the Army during the Vietnam War. While working as a construction superintendent he met his wife Ingrid, and they shared a loving life for 31 years. His greatest joys were spending time with his children and grandchildren. He will be missed dearly by wife Ingrid, daughter Tanja Kniat (and husband Peter), and sons Jeff Thompson (and wife Courtney) and Tyler Thompson and his grandchildren Melody, Lydia and new grandbaby Ethan Richard. His death is grieved also by sisters Anne Thompson Patton (and husband John) and Mary Thompson McGill (and husband Bob).

Richard was a man who embraced what life gave him and always found a way to laugh. He was the kindest and most honorable man. His family liked to joke that you could give Richard a beer and a million dollars to keep for you and no matter when you returned he would have both. He will be missed by so many.

Richards first and greatest love was always his family, with Georgia Tech football being a close second.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 2:00 PM from Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Haralson, GA with Pastor Doug Landers officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery following the service with Military Honors provided by the U.S. Army. Friends may visit the family on Saturday from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM prior to the service.

A reception will follow the interment at Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society (donate.cancer.org)
