Police officer for the Oceanside California Police Department. He attended South Oceanside Elementary School, Lincoln Middle School and Oceanside High School, where he played football as a freshman. He also was active in his youth group at North Coast Church in Vista. He was hired by the Palomar College Police Department as a student community service officer in 2000 but left later that year to join a cadet internship program with the Oceanside Police Department. Two years later, he became a community service officer, then a sworn officer in 2003. He worked the swing shift in the Mesa Margarita neighborhood in northeast Oceanside. His main responsibilities were working with the community on problems, which included gang issues. He is survived by his wife, Katelyn, and their 2-month-old son Wyatt. Dan was described as a fun-loving, always-in-motion, loyal friend who unceasingly itched for adventure. He liked to hunt, hike and fish. He was known for telling animated, detailed stories that often included jumping around and creating voices for children, women or anyone featured in the story. Officer Bessant was shot in the line of duty. He was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla where he passed away. (Bio written by Sue.)
