US Congressman from New York. He studied law with a local lawyer and in 1806 became an attorney whose practice covered all of Schoharie County and several nearby counties. He held the office of County Loan Commissioner, and was a member of the New York Assembly in 1816. Active in the state militia, he accepted a commission as Brigadier General and served in this capacity for several years. In 1816 Lawyer was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democratic-Republican and served one term, 1817 to 1819. He did not run for reelection in 1818 and returned to his law practice. From 1822 to 1831 he was Schoharie County District Attorney, and in 1824 the state legislature appointed him as the presidential elector for his congressional district. In 1846 Lawyer again served in the New York Assembly. He retired after this legislative term and became active in the Lawyersville Reformed Church. The Cobleskill hamlet of Lawyersville is named for him. His house in Lawyersville still stands and in 2006 was home to a retail tea and herb business, "Thyme for Tea."
