Nephew of Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes. Per his obituary he was one of the best known antiquarians in New England. He graduated from Harvard in the class of 1856 and his exhaustive knowledge of the systems of shorthand in use during the Colonial period enabled him to decipher manuscripts that must otherwise remained unintelligible, a notable achievement being his recent recovery of the phonetic alphabet employed by Jonathan Edwards.
