Presidential Cabinet Member. After graduating from Wabash College, he studied law, was admitted to bar, became politically active lawyer and was chairman of the National Republican Committee in 1918. In 1920, he was successful in the forward campaign for Warren G. Harding’s election to the presidency of the United States. The following year President Warren G. Harding appointed Hays as a Republican, the 46th United States Postmaster General, serving from 1921 to 1922. After leaving his cabinet position, he became the first Chairman of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America, serving (1922-45). In his new Hollywood position, he renovated the image of the movie industry in the wake of the scandals, attempted to reduce studio costs and improved the film industry's image in general. He also commissioned several studies of the employment conditions in Hollywood and setup the Central Casting Corporation in 1925, as a means to regulate the hiring of extras in Hollywood. After his retirement, he returned to Indiana, until his death.
