William Backus, Ph.D. - S.T.M., M. Div., Licensed Psychologist Age 79, of Roseville, MN, went home peacefully to be with his Lord, listening to Bach's Magnificat, his family gathered at his bedside, on June 12, 2005 following complications of spinal surgery.

Bill was born in Elko, NV on May 5, 1926. He grew up in San Leandro, CA, received a B.A. and Masters of Divinity degrees at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO. He was called to serve as pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, St. Louis. In 1956, he began serving at a Lutheran parish in Pleasant Hill, CA. He received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1969 from the University of Minnesota.

Bill was on staff at Hennepin County General Hospital, founded the Center for Christian Psychological Services, and for many years served on the staff of North Heights Lutheran Church, Roseville, MN. Bill authored many books, published by Bethany House Publishers, based on his classic book, 'Telling Yourself the Truth'. These books have been published in many languages ministering the freedom in truth to many people worldwide. Bill will be best remembered for his integrity, humor, enthusiasm, love of Bach, compassion for people who were hurting, and his deep love for Jesus, his Lord and Savior. He was completely devoted to his parishioners, patients, friends, and family. He was preceded in death by his father, Lynn; his mother, Elaine; his stepfather, Roland; and his infant twin sister. He is survived by his loving wife, Candy; his children, Martin (Judith), Roxanne (Kevin) Barber, Christa (Patrick) Mehrhoff and Deborah (Gary) Stadsklev; also survived by his sister, Marian (Gene) Faszholz; sister-in-law, Kathy (John) Thompson; nephew; 3 nieces; 14 grandchildren; many loving family members and friends; and his devoted dog, Cappy.
