Candace Backus, RN, age 63, of Oro Valley, AZ, and formerly of Roseville, MN, died from natural causes. She went home peacefully to be with her Lord on January 18, 2014.


Candy will be remembered for her humor, warm hugs, compassion for those who were sick or hurting, her mischievous brown eyes, spontaneous laughter, and her fond nicknames for everyone.


Preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, William Backus; her parents, Gordon and Marian (Smith); and her granddaughter, Molly.


She is survived by her stepchildren, Martin (Judith) Backus, Roxanne (Kevin) Barber, Christa (Patrick) Mehrhoff, and Deborah (Gary) Stadsklev; sister and lifelong friend, Kathy (John) Thompson; sister-in-law, Marian (Gene) Faszholz; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two nieces; one nephew; her precious dog, Lollipop; and many other loving family members and friends whose hearts she touched.


Candy was born in Long Beach, CA, and moved to Arizona in 1954. After graduating from Palo Verde High School in Tucson, Candy became a flight attendant in MN, where she met and married Dr. William Backus. They resided in the Twin Cities area for 33 years, where Candy was a paramedic and continued her education to become an RN.


Candy moved to Tucson in 2006 and became a hospice nurse, a profession that was of great importance to Candy and meshed with her caring and compassionate personality.
