James, 92, of Battle Creek died on October 17, 2016 at his home following a short illness.
Jim was born to Edward and Mable (Hanson) Buckenberger.

At the age of 8, due to a health crisis, he was baptized by his Grandfather Andreas Buckenberger. He later was baptized into the Lutheran faith by Reverend W. Krueger.

In 1929, the family moved to Minnesota, and resided in Saint Paul, Faribault, Lake Crystal, and Mankato at various times. Jim graduated in 1941 from College High School in Mankato. He attended Mankato State Teachers College in Mankato for one year. He then taught in one-room schools for two years before moving to Michigan to join his family.

He began teaching at the Spaulding School in Emmett Township which later became part of the Harper Creek Schools. He retired from there in 1982, having taught a total of forty years. He was a graduate from Western Michigan University earning both a bachelors and masters degree from there.

On July 18, 1964 he was married to Evelyn Baldwin at Zion Lutheran Church in Marshall. Two children David and Kristina were born to them. Jim was active at Zion serving as council secretary closer to twenty five years, and he also served a term as church treasurer. He was a member of the NEA, MEA and Marsp.

He is survived by his children Kristina Buckenberger and David (Marianne) Buckenberger; a granddaughter Gabrielle Buckenberger; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Evelyn; and brother Robert.

Funeral services were on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Zion Lutheran Church, Marshall with Reverend Anthony Voltattorni officiating. Interment followed at Oakridge Cemetery. Family gathered with friends following the committal services at the Zion Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall.
