Monmouth Democrat, Thursday September 28,1939:

"David Southard, 79, of Lakewood, died Saturday while being taken in an ambulance to Paul Kimball Hospital, with head injuries sustained when he was thrown to the road after walking into a protruding spray bar an oiling truck while working on a County Road improvement project in Lakewood.
Mr. Southard was preparing to shovel gravel on the side of the road and according to witnesses, was walking with his head down and apparently did not see the spray bar on the approaching oil truck, which caught him below the knees, throwing him forward.
The truck was driven by James White of Lambert's Corner. He was released by Recorder Henry Leslie on his own recognizance to appear in court, if necessary on a technical charge of causing a death by a motor vehicle.
Mr. Southard was born in Howell Township, the son of David Southard and Mrs. Rhoda Hulse Southard. He was a member of the Jr OUAM and the Patriotic Order, Sons of America.
He is survived by a son, Jospeh H. of Hyson; three daughters, Mrs. Mary H Robertson of Lakewood; Mrs. Rachel A Brower, with whom he lived, and Mrs. Nettie Moore of Oceanort; four brothers, William of Adelphia; Thomas of Southard; James of Freehold, and Rev. George Southard, pastor of the Waretown Methodist Church; a sister, Mrs. Amy J Applegate of Adelphia; and eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at the Brower home with the Rev Hillman T Williams, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was made in Greenville Cemetery under the direction of CHT Clayton & Son of Adelphia".
