Messman Ruffus Edgar Alston was a Merchant Marine whose boat, the SS India Arrow, was sunk by a German U boat off the New Jersey coast. Ruffus was killed in the attack and went down with his ship. Ruffus' remains were never recovered. At the time of his death his remaining family lived in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Ruffus is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Cone Alston Snedecor, two sisters and two brothers. His father, Elmer Boyd Alston died in 1918.

Memorial stones are located at Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City, Texas.
