The land that James purchased was originally owned by the Kansas Pacific Railway Co. in 1880. Then it was sold to the Union Pacific Railroad and then to Seymour Hutchinson. James and his first wife purchased the land south of Dorrance on July 22, 1889 from Mr Hutchinson and his wife Mary J. Hutchinson in the amount of $15,800. Mr. Short had "paid in full" his mortgage on August 27, 1896. After his death, Ida and Francis were the heirs. Francis received $12,000 plus some of the land and Ida received the rest. He was into the mining business also. James had sisters that visited him and Ida in Dorrance. They lived in Illinois.
