MILLERSBURG -- Wanda Lou Brinker, 63, of Millersburg, died Wednesday, Oct. 19 at Aultman Hospital from depression and suicide.

She was born May 23, 1953 in Millersburg to Carl and Lorna (Close) Hoxworth.
Wanda Brinker, 63, Millersburg

On May 23, 1986 she married Russell L. Brinker Sr. He preceded her in death on June 1, 2008.

Wanda was a 1971 graduate of West Holmes High School. She was employed at Castle Nursing Homes in various roles for many years. The past 20 years she had been caretaker of her daughter, Carlie and also her husband, Russ. She attended Faith Family Fellowship in Mount Eaton

The family will receive friends and family on Saturday, Oct. 29 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 187 S. Clay St. in Millersburg. A Celebration of Life will follow at 1:15 p.m. with pastor Rob McBride. A private family burial will take place at a later time.

She loved the Holmes County fair from the time she was a little girl and some of her best memories came from there. She loved her pony Trigger and in many more recent years she enjoyed when the girls showed goats. Wanda was an avid Indians and Cavs fan as well as dirt track racing at Hilltop Speedway and also NASCAR. Her favorite driver? None other than Tony Stewart. Though she hadn't played for a number of years due to pain, she was a pianist and organist, playing at different churches and weddings through the years.

Wanda was a mother, a sister, a daughter, an aunt, a cousin and a friend. She didn't know a stranger. Caring, loving, generous, helpful, generally self-less. These are qualities that were obvious to those who knew her. Unfortunately, her battle with depression blurred her image of herself, and she did not see how much she was loved, valued or needed.

Wanda's family asks you, the community, to open your eyes, your ears and your heart. The stigma surrounding mental illness and suicide is stifling people from all walks of life and of all ages. We can bring this social issue to light and not only talk about it but make a difference. Silence and shame surrounding these topics need to be abolished. It's time for change so that other families can be saved from going through the heartache and grief of suicide.

Wanda is survived by her son, Jeffrey (Lauren) Hartman and daughter, Heather Hartman, both of Millersburg and daughter, Carlie Brinker of the home; grandchildren, Brittany (Danny) Merillat, Sabrina Hartman, and their mother Tracy Cotrell and Ashley and Lawrence Simpkins Jr.; niece, Becky Hoxworth and son, Isaac Hoxworth; nephews, Michael (Megan) Hoxworth and children Parker, Connor and Grayson Hoxworth, JJ Hoxworth (Danielle Markley) and children Abbie and Aiden Hoxworth, and Mark Hoxworth (Angie Miller) and children Tessa and Hayleigh Miller; cousins, Yvonne Maxwell of Navarre and Lois Smith of Rittman.

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brother, Jerry Hoxworth; granddaughter, Victoria Lee Simpkins; and great-nieces, Michaela and Marina Hoxworth.

Family suggests that contributions be made to the Wanda Brinker Memorial Fund, c/o Alexander Funeral Home, P.O. Box 108, Millersburg 44654.
