US Congressman. He served two terms in Congress as an Indiana Representative begining in 1834. He then served in the Senate as President pro tem. He was Secretary of the Navy during the Hayes administration. He was the first to send American warships to Korea to open trade with that country. Before he was Secretary of the Navy, you had to go to New York to enlist. Thompson opened Naval recruiting offices throughout the country.
