Born Maria Russo at Montelepre, Province of Palermo, Sicily, Italy, the daugher of Francesco Russo and Girolama Lombardo, she emigrated to the USA with her mother and siblings in 1906. She was the devoted wife of Joseph Giammona, the mother of twelve surviving children (Peter, Frances, Mary, Frank, Charles, Josephine, Anthony, Sam, Mamie, John, Agnes, Rosemary), aunt to many and a beloved grandmother for many more. She became a naturalized citizen of the USA in 1944. A member of the parish of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, she was a pillar in the Sicilian community of Grand Rapids, Michigan
