Mr. Bailey was born Aug. 11, 1916 and died Oct. 23, 2016 in Wells.

Graveside services for Milburn D. Bailey, 100, of Wells, will be held in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Wells.

Mr. Bailey was born August 11, 1916 in Cherokee County, Texas, the son of the late Carrie (Cherry) and Robert "Bob" Bailey. He passed away Sunday, October 23, 2016 at his residence.

Mr. Bailey was a fourth generation farmer/rancher. He wore many hats during his lifetime. He graduated from Wells High School in 1934. Upon graduation from Port Arthur Business School, he worked in Houston. He met and married "Gwen" while living in Houston. He was in Houston about 8 years before returning to Wells, where he lived the rest of his life in Cherokee County, either at the "farm" or in town. He worked at First State Bank in Wells for 15 years and then several months at Continental state Bank in Alto. He also did some part-time farming while banking. After his banking days, he worked as salesman for Lufkin Typewriter Company and remained there for 27 years, retiring in 1987. He served as Wells city secretary, city tax collector, Wells ISD Equalization Board, secretary of Eagle Lake hunting/fishing club, sat on the board of Falvey Memorial Methodist Church, collected funds for Cancer Society & Heart Association, secretary of Wells Lyons Club, and at one time sold tombstones for a company in Nacogdoches.

Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Jo Anne and Ferris L. Smith, LaDonna and Pete Sullivan; grandchildren, Robert D. and Shelia Smith, Kelly and Joe Spurgin, Scott Smith and Kerbie Holmes, Ryan and Jaime Smith, and Cherie and Chad Polasek; great-grandchildren; Montana Smith Harris (U. S. Navy) and Shade Harris, Christian Smith, Sierra Smith, Shelby and Sam Spurgin, Carson and Addison Smith, and Colby Polasek; and special friends, Laura and Roy White.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by his wife, Gwendolyn K. Bailey; and brother, Robert D. Bailey.
