One of 9 children of a prominent businessman in Norway. At age 15 made two visits to the East Indies, and returned home to study navigation, and passed the examination in Spring, 1850. After that, he went to Copenhagen, then New York, and then California, landing in San Francisco in January, 1851.In May of that year there was a great fire, He took a steamer to Stckton to try his luck in mining, but returned to San Francisco. In 1854 he started working at Cross and Company commercial House and became assistant manager; He was there 12 years. In March 1864 he married, He went on a business trio to England and Norway, and on return established a business as an importer. In 1884 he became Consul for Norway and Sweden (in San Francisco)
