The youngest of four sisters and with one younger brother, the Nagels grew up active in their German language Lutheran church in Lincoln, and helping their father and mother in their store.
She married Paul E. Kovach Jr., and their family resided in South Bend, Indiana. They had two daughters. Martha lost her husband, Paul, on May 25, 1976. She died on September 17, 1991, in South Bend, Indiana, at the age of 70, and was buried there.
