John Nielson was born Jens Nielsen to Niels Olsen (1822-1891) Ane Sorensdatter (1828-1859)

He emigrated to New Zealand onboard the Halicone and arrived in Wellington on 27 Jul 1872. He was followed by his sister Maren Sophie Nielsen, known in New Zealand as Mary Sophia Lankey two years later in 1874.

John worked as a blacksmith and married Catherine Buchanan Baillie in 1876. He received New Zealand Naturalisation on the 23rd of March 1887 at age 35 and was residing in Mauriceville, Carterton, Wairarapa, NZ. After 1993 the family relocated to Taranaki NZ.
