Notes for CALVIN WALTER BURDGE:
Left PA as a young man, with brother Norman after disagreement with father. Worked their way to Ohio. Norman returned to PA. Calvin Walter was always known as Walter Burdge. He worked for a Charles Keller and accompanied the Kellers to North Dakota helping to tend the horses and cattle enroute. He married one of Charles Keller’s daughters, Addie, after arriving in ND. Their five boys were all born in Towner County ND. Addie’s health was not too good. She had a breathing problem and the Dr. thought that mountain air would be better for her breathing. Walter sold out in ND and moved the family to Libby, Montana where he got a job in a wood mill off Libby Creek which ran into the Kootenai River.
The boys were in grade school at the time.
At the time the family moved to Spokane, the boys were grown and there were wild forest fires near Bend, Oregon. Chester went with his Dad to help fight the fires. Chester went back to North Dakota via Spokane but his Dad went to explore possibilities of a ranch and wound up at Grass Valley, California where he bought a ranch. He died and is buried at Grass Valley, CA.

Walter Burdge of Penn Valley Died in Night
Walter Burdge, 63, who owned and operated a small farm on the Bridgeport road in the Penn Valley section for many years, was found dead in his home at 8:30 yesterday morning, the demise taking place some time during the night, after a short period of illness.
Burdge’s body was found by Elmer and Pauline Beladean, neighbors, who had visited him the previous night and inquired as to the condition of his health. Burdge at that time was regarded as quite ill. Upon their return yesterday morning, the Beladeans found that life had fled Burdge.
Burdge is reported to have resided at the farm location for a number of years, running a head of stock, growing some farm produce and cutting some wood.
He leaves several sons, one Emery Burdge of Spokane who was informed of his father’s death by Coroner L. R. Jefford.
The body now lies at the W. R. Jefford and Son Funeral Home awaiting funeral arrangements.
