William Paul Morehouse, 71, of 1535 Pego Ct., died Wednesday, Oct. 26th, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, IA after a sudden illness.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 29, 2016 at Church of the Nativity, with Msgr. James Miller officiating. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 Friday, Oct. 28th at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St. Visitation also from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Nativity Church.
Bill was born December 8, 1944, in Platteville, Wis., to Paul and Gertrude Morehouse. He grew up in Lancaster, Wis., and graduated a proud Flying Arrow from Lancaster High School. He hopped across the river in 1964 and married Jane Coleman on Aug. 13, 1966 at Nativity Church in Dubuque. He soon began work at Vulcan Tool in Dubuque before moving on to John Deere Dubuque Works, where he worked 35 years and put four children through college without a dime of student aid.
Bill volunteered with the Boy Scouts at St. Raphael's. He served as coach of the Hawks in Independent League. He also served as a counselor with the Dubuque chapter of Junior Achievement for many years. Bill played league softball for many years with coworkers from John Deere.
Bill loved his grandchildren and treasured every moment he had with them. He was known to surprise them with a Kennedy half dollar. He was a longtime member and supporter of Nativity Church. He served as an usher long after his left knee refused to genuflect. Some of Bill's favorite things were long drives with Jane, old-time radio programs, trips to Lake Namakagon, Wis., the Packers, of which he became a proud owner, the Cubs (oh, if he could see them now), the sport of wrestling, feeding his birds and squirrels in the pines of Pego, and the occasional cigar with whiskey.
Survivors include his wife, Jane; his children, Marc (Becky) Morehouse of Fairfax, Matthew Morehouse of Dubuque, Anna (Roger) Zimmerman of Cedar Falls, Elizabeth (Jeff) Winders of Marion, a brother, Tom Morehouse of Port Byron, Ill.; and six grandchildren, Devin, Ethan, Will, Elly, Jace, and Casey.
He will be remembered warmly by his family, and by so many others in Dubuque, his home for more than 50 years.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Bill's name.
