She married Dr. W. Minster Kunkel Sr. in 1923 and subsequently was widowed by him. In October 1947, she married 16th District Republican Rep. John C. Kunkel, a second cousin of Dr. Kunkel. John Kunkel served in the 76th through 82nd Congresses.
George I. Bloom, widely known as ''Mr. Republican'' for his nearly 70 years in state GOP politics, said he knew Mrs. Kunkel well.
''She was very active and a very fine lady,'' Bloom said yesterday.
During her husband's terms in Congress, she was elected president of the Congressional Wives Club of Washington, the International Neighbors Club, and was vice president of the Congressional Prayer Group.
She was trustee of the John C. Kunkel Foundation, and donated her Harrisburg home for use as headquarters for United Way of the Capital Region.
She served in the American Women's Voluntary Service during World War II, and was an officer in the American Bridge League of Central Pennsylvania.
She had been a member of the Art Association of Harrisburg; chairwoman of the Women's Division of the Welfare Campaign and the Tuberculosis Society; president of Harrisburg Community Theatre, Homeland, the Auxiliary of the Dauphin County Medical Society, and the Auxiliary of Harrisburg Hospital; and vice president of the Harrisburg Junior League and Civic Club.
She was also actively involved with the National Association of Colonial Dames, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Daughters of Founders of Patriots of America, and was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Cathedral, Harrisburg, and All Saints Episcopal Church, Virginia Beach.
Surviving are a son, Dr. W. Minster Jr. of Harrisburg; two daughters, Mary Lynn Wright of Florida, and Katherine Tabb Stark of Tennessee; a sister, Mrs. J. Leland Woodbury of Virginia Beach; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were to be held today in Virginia Beach and at 11 a.m. May 12 in her church in Harrisburg.
