Born in Longswamp Township, the son of the late Alvin N. Wetzel and Verna M. (Romig) Wetzel.
LeRoy joined the U. S. Navy in 1948 serving during the Korean War and Vietnam War retiring after 22 years of service, He served on the USS Beatty, USS Wisconsin, USS Saratoga, USS Lake Champlain, USS Daniel A. Joy and USS Northampton, known as the floating White House he was on board during President Lyndon Johnson’s term.
He was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Pricetown, Topton Lions Club and Ray Masters Legion Post 217, Topton.
In retirement Roy enjoyed bird watching and caring for his dog, Dexter.
LeRoy is survived by his wife Chris and children Dale J. Wetzel husband of Roxanne Wetzel of Selma, Texas, Dennis E. Wetzel husband of Susan Wetzel of Winthrop Harbor, Ill and Debbie J. Valentine of Conway, SC. Four grandchildren and one great grandson. He also is survived by his siblings Pearl (Wetzel) Boeshore, Topton, Betty (Wetzel) Herbster, Topton, Marie (Wetzel) wife of LeRoy Lesher, Macungie, Nancy (Wetzel) wife of Bruce Bieber, Alburtis, Floyd Wetzel, Alburtis, Ralph Wetzel husband of Donna Wetzel, Oley, Clair Wetzel husband of Virginia Wetzel, Topton and Wayne Wetzel husband of Cindy Wetzel of Macungie.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Edgar Wetzel, Nevin Wetzel, Lewis Wetzel and sister Mabel Wetzel.
A viewing will be Monday October 31st from 11:00AM to 12:00 noon followed by funeral service at noon from the Mae A. Stump Funeral Home, Inc., 117 West Main Street, Fleetwood. Burial will be in Indiantown Gap Nation Cemetery with military honors.
