Born about 992, in Dammartin-en-Goële, Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France, France, he was the son of Hilduin II, comte d'Arcis-sur-Aube and Seigneur de Ramerupt. He was the first comte de Dammartin.
He married Constance, Princesse de France, the daughter of Robert II, Roi de France and Constance de Provence. They had three children, Eudes, who succeeded him as comte de Dammartin, Hugues I, who succeeded his brother as comte de Dammarton, and Eustachie de Dammartin.
