FORTUNE - Died at 1:20 o'clock Friday afternoon, Jan. 10, 1913, from a complication of diseases, Mrs. Martha J. Fortune, aged 72 years and 7 days.

Mrs. Fortune was born July 3, 1840 in Maryland.

In 1856, she came to Illinois with her parents and settled near Mechanicsburg.

She was married to Thomas Fortune June 27, 1865, who died in 1890 [sic]. [editor note: Thomas Fortune's obituary has the marriage on June 17, 1866.]

Mrs. Fortune had been a resident of this county for the past fifty-six years and had been a resident of Springfield for the past twenty-three years.

She was a member of the George W. Reed circle, Ladies of the G.A.R. and a member of the Court of Honor.

She was a member of Kumler M.E. church.

She was well known in Springfield, and her loss will be felt by a wide circle of friends.

Surviving are two sons, Norman and Earl Fortune, both residing in Springfield; three daughters, Mrs. Edward Maus, Mrs. W.J. Pruce of Springfield and Mrs. Thomas Martin of Clayton.

The funeral services were held at the residence.

The remains were interred in Mechanicsburg cemetery.
