HOUSTON, TX - Barbara Ellen Riddle née Malin (1940-2016).

Barbara was born on February 13, 1940, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She passed away on October 29, 2016, in Houston, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Jewel Malin; daughter, Amanda Denise; sister, Nancy; brothers, Fred Jr; and Bill.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Alton; son, Glenn and wife Rita; sister, Cloe Ann Hayes and husband Pete; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; nieces; nephews and numerous lifelong friends.

Barbara was a Registered Nurse and enjoyed her nursing career which spanned over 50 years. She graduated from Jefferson Davis Nursing School in 1963, and continued her education at Texas Christian University where she earned a bachelor of Science in Nursing. During her nursing studies, she made friendships with Sharon Kelley, Lupita Perez-Guillermey, and Shirley Meeker - friendships which she maintained for the rest of her life. Barbara worked at Sharpstown General Hospital, the Edna Gladney Home in Fort Worth, Texas, and the Veterans’ Administration Hospital in Houston, Texas. She retired from the VA in 2008. She was blessed with numerous friendships from the VA and continued to keep close contact with her work friends long after her retirement.

Barbara married Alton Denton Riddle on December 4, 1965. They made their home and raised their family here in Sharpstown. She and Alton were married at Westbury Baptist Church, where they remained members for over 30 years before joining Sharpstown Baptist Church. She was always active and dedicated to serving, working tirelessly in various capacities such as G.A.’s youth Sunday School, etc. She selflessly donated her time to serve as a nurse for various youth camps and mission trips over the years, including camps attended by her children and grandchildren.

Barbara actively supported her children in their school and extra-curricular activities, chaperoning field trips, attending basketball games, and volunteering with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. Her time working with Mandy’s Girl Scout troop included numerous camping trips, local and national, and culminated with a trip to Yellowstone National Park, a location she loved and was privileged to visit three more times during her life.

Barbara loved to travel and was always up for a road trip, favoring driving over flying so she could take her time stopping at attractions along the way. During her later years, her travel included numerous trips to Branson, Missouri, and to see Bill Gaither Group and her favorite performer, Gospel Singer Lynda Randle. Although she did not play any musical instruments, music was always a big part of her life and she enjoyed listening to different genres, including country, gospel, and old-timey rock-and-roll.

Barbara had a strong Christian faith which sustained her through the trials of life. Her priorities were her faith, family, and friends. She was determined, fiercely loyal, and a “giver” who constantly strove to serve others in both her professional and personal relationships. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, and grandmother, and we will greatly miss her quick wit, delicious home cooking, and most of all her love, comfort, and compassion. She touched so many lives in her 76 years. Our loss is heaven’ s gain and we rejoice in the belief that we will one day be with her again.
