Paris Township

J. Q. ADAMS, farmer and breeder of Short-horn cattle, Section 28, Town 21, Range 23, P. O. Mound City, was born in Boston, Mass., March 9, 1830. When young, he was taken by his parents to Coshocton County, Ohio, where he was raised and educated, and in 1848 he engaged in teaching school, which he pursued until 1852, when he located in Decatur County, Ind., and engaged in teaching until 1859, when he came to Kansas and located in Blue Mound Township, Linn county. In 1866, he settled in Paris Township, on his present place of 740 acres. In 1861, he was appointed County Superintendent, and in 1862 was elected to that position and served two terms. He was married in Decatur County, Ind., January 22, 1856, to Sarah J. Wilson, of Greensburg, Ind. They have nine children - John Q., Ida B., Maro M., Eddie J., Ira G., Daisy, Bruce B., Don L. and Myrte M.

John Q Adams was recorded as age [20] in the 1850 Keene, Coshocton, Ohio census with parents John Q, 49, and Lovina (nee Walker) Adams, who had married in Boston 16 Nov 1828. John Q., Jr., was recorded with 6 younger siblings in the 1850 census. They were listed as Edward, 18; Sarah, 16; Jane, 14; Augusta, 12; Betsy, 10, & Doretha, 8, all born in Ohio. John Q., Sr., was born in New Hampshire and Lovina was born in Maine.

John Q. Adams married Sarah Jane Wilson on January 22, 1856 in Decatur County, Indiana. (Indiana marriage index) J. Q. Adams, 30, & Sarah, 22, were in Mound City, Linn, Kansas Territory in the 1860 census with John, age 3, and a daughter, age 1, both born in Indiana.

J. Q. & Sarah remained in Linn County, Kansas and were recorded together in the 1865, 1870, 1875, & 1880, & 1885 state and federal census reports. The 1880 census records their children as Ida B., 21; Mars M., 17; Eddie J., 15; Ira G., 13; Daisy, 8; Bruce B., 6; & Leon, 1. The 1880 census records the birthplace of the father of John Q. Adams as New Hampshire and his mother's birthplace as Maine. The 1885 state census shows the additions of Myrtle M., age 3?, and a baby, (Robert Clyde.)

The Kansas Deaths and Burials Index records the death date and location of John Quincy Adams. He died in Paris Township, Linn County, Kansas, at the age of 63. This index also records his birth in Boston about 1830.

Three of the sons were land owners in Township 21 South, Range 23 East in Linn County, Kansas in a 1906 plat map.

John's daughter, Daisy, was recorded as age 5 in the 1875 Paris, Linn, Kansas state census. She married Albert Ashbaugh and died in Los Angeles in 1946. (California Death Index)
