Alf A. Aanestad, 91, Burnsville, Minn., formerly of Minot, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010, in Edina, Minn.

Alf was born June 11, 1919, a son of Rev. H.M. and Anna (Dahl) Aanestad, in Esmond. He was raised and educated in the Esmond area, graduating from Esmond High School in 1937. He attended Minot State and graduated from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

On Feb. 22, 1942, Alf enlisted in the Navy. He attended officers' training school at Columbia University in New York City. Alf received the World War II Victory Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 27, 1946.

Alf was united in marriage to Naedine Fredrickson on Jan. 14, 1944, while he was receiving further training in Miami. For most of their married life, they lived in Minot, where Alf held the position of Director of Financial Aid at Minot State University.

Music was Alf's hobby. He sang in college quartets, barbershop, and First Lutheran Church Choir. Alf and Dr. Joe Hegstad, former Music Department Chair at Minot State College, had a dream of starting a male chorus in Minot. In October 1974, their dream became a reality, when the Heritage Singers was born. Alf became an anchor bass in the choir that he loved. He sang with the choir for more than 30 years.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Minot, where he taught Sunday school and was a longtime member of the church council. Alf was a member of the Minot Y's Men, active with the Y's Men's rodeo and selling Christmas trees. He participated with the Golden Oaks club in Minot, understanding education in the Minot Public Schools. For many years, Alf volunteered at Roosevelt Park Zoo and Norsk Hostfest.

But most of all, Alf enjoyed spending time with his wife, daughters, grandchildren and other family members. He was a wonderful family man who taught us many things. He will be greatly missed.

A special thank you for the wonderful care Alf received from nurse Micki and the nurses at N C Little Hospice in Edina, Minn.

Those who shared in his life: Wife of 66 years, Naedine, Burnsville, Minn.; daughters, Susan Anderson, Minneapolis, Minn., Sherry (Bill) Tapper, Burnsville; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother, Jack Aanestad, Santa Barbara, Calif.; sister, Solveig Thorstenson, St. Paul, Minn.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
