MANCHESTER, N.H., Oct 22 — Charles Edson Cox . . . died this morning at his home here after a long siege of sickness. He was in his 88th year.

Charles Edson Cox, son of Walter Blair Cox and Nancy Nutter Cox, was born in Holderness, Dec. 2, 1846. His education was secured in the public schools of Holderness and New Hampton Institution. Removing to Manchester, he engaged in the meat and cattle business under the firm name Cass & Cox, which they continued for nine years. After this, Mr. Cox engaged in buying and selling of tenament[sic] property, which he continued throughout the remainder of his active life.

Mr. Cox was active and influential in public affairs, both in State and local circles. He served in the House of Representatives in 1885-6, one term in the Manchester Common Council, six years as a member of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen, and was warden of the New Hampshire State Prison for nine years. In politics he was a stanch[sic] Republican, and attended the Franklin Street Congregational Church. He held membership in Washington Lodge of Masons and various other Masonic bodies. He was once drafted by his party to run for the office of Mayor, and after a spirited campaign was defeated.

He leaves four sons, all of whom have attained to prominence. In the order of their seniority, they are Walter Randall Cox of Goshen, N.H., one of the most noted reinsman and trainer of trotting horses in the country; Guy Wilder Cox of Boston, prominent in law and insurance circles; Judge Louis Sherburne Cox, of the Massachusetts Superior Court, who resides in Methuen, Mass.; and Channing Harris Cox of Boston, Governor of Massachusetts from 1919 to 1924, and now vice president of the First National Bank of Boston, and a director in a large number of corporations.

There are three grandchildren, Miss Nancy [Cox], daughter of Ex-Gov and Mrs. Channing H. Cox; and Randall T. Cox and Miss Dorthy[sic] Cox, son and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Guy W. Cox.
