William was born in Brooklyn to Owen Cunningham (1839-1883) and Mary Ann Hunt (1841-1896). He was born and raised in Brooklyn and became a Ropemaker like his father and uncles before him. When his wife, Catherine Diefenbach, died of uterine cancer in 1913, they had young children. William's sister, Mary, move in with him and helped him raise the children. His sister never married.
