Albert Lawrence Blackwood, 92, of 110 Crestview Drive, Gaffney, S.C. died on Friday, November 4, 2016 at Mary Black Health System of Gaffney.
Born in Spartanburg, S.C. he was the husband of the late Alberta Sarratt Blackwood and Peggy Davis Blackwood. He was the son of the late William Grady Blackwood and Edna Mae Lavender Blackwood.
He was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II where he served on the U.S.S. R. W. Herndon as a boatswain’s mate and gunner. He was retired from First Piedmont Federal and was the owner/operator of Blackwood Real Estate. He was a member of Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church. He graduated from Gaffney High where he was a member of the football team, and was also a Mason and Shriner.
He is survived by his fiancé, Betty Kirby, of Blacksburg, S.C.; a sister in love, Elizabeth L. Darwin, of Gaffney; and Bill Vassey and wife, Martha, of Gaffney, whom he loved as children.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Oscar Chapman “O.C.” Blackwood; and an infant sister, Irene Blackwood.

The family will receive friends on Monday, November 7, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Blakely Funeral Home. The funeral service will immediately follow in the Blakely Funeral Home Chapel at 3:00 PM with Dr. Clyde Thomas officiating. Pallbearers will be the members of his Sunday school class. Interment will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1449, Gaffney, S.C. 29342.
