"Johanna was a very tidy lady & taught her daughters to be very good homemakers. Because of the lack of money, they were reared to be very thrifty. Johanna was a fine seamstress. There were few sewing machines and all was sewn by hand. Johanna wove the material & then sewed it. Being she had many sons, she made, with her daughters' help, "bosom shirts". These shirts were covered with pin tucks across the front. It was a tremendous job. Johanna had nearly all the chores to do. They kept a few cows, sheep, pigs & oxen. The women in those days were expected to do the milking, while the men earned money with woodwork & building for other immigrants. The children of the family herded the cattle & sheep all day long rain or shine. Ingeri (one of the daughters) said that many times they were scared to death because of tramps that were always on the roam."...from a Johnson Individual History written by Elnathan Anderson (great grandson of Johanne Johnson & grandson of Ingeri Johnson Anderson who probably told him much of the family stories) - Info from Janet Stephenson
