James D. Alway was born in Graceville, Minn. to Robert Douglas and Eleanor M Alway (1883-?). He had siblings Martha N. (1900–) and Eleanor Jane Armstrong(1904–). His father died Dec 21, 1929 in Brown, South Dakota.

He married Maude Hazel Williams (born 1902 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota) on Jan 30, 1926 in Sioux Falls. She died Mar 2, 1951 and is buried in Aberdeen, South Dakota. They had three children, James Douglas Alway Jr. 1926–2002, Thomas Frank Alway 1934–1999, and a daughter. After her death, he married Laura Alice Stowe in Feb 1954 in New Orleans.

He was a graduate of Rush Medical School in Chicago and came to Sun City in 1963 from Aberdeen, S.D.,where he had been in private practice for 38 years.

He was a member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Sun City.

Survivors included his wife, Laura; two sons, Dr. James D. Alway Jr. of Phoenix and Frank T. Alway of San Mateo, Calif.; one daughter of San Francisco; three stepdaughters of Aberdine, Janesville, Wis. and Tucson, and six grandchildren.

James Douglas Alway Jr.: Jul 30, 2002 in Paradise Valley, Arizona.
