George Grubaugh was born to Michael Grubaugh and Peggy ?? in about 1778. Very little hard data exists that supports the dates for George and/or his marriages. What is presented here is my best interpretation of the information available.
George married Susannah Faust sometime before 1795. The date may be somewhat later than 1795, but their only child, David, was reportedly born in 1795. Susannah died in 1804 and George married Sarah "Sally" Friend on 2 Sep 1806 in Jefferson County, OH. They were the parents of two daughters, Margaret Grubaugh (b.1805) and Mary Isabella Grubaugh (1807). There are a number of researchers who believe that Margaret Grubaugh is the daughter of Michael & Peggy. Both daughters, however, married brothers, Margaret marrying John A. Karnes and Mary Isabella marrying William Means Karnes - both on the same day, 12 Apr 1829 - in Wayne County, OH.
George died in 1813. One researcher states that George died in an oxcart accident returning from duty in the War of 1812. The accident was unrelated to the war. Many researchers show George dying in 1818 (and also an assumed son, George, dying in 1818), but the only hard evidence regarding George's death comes from a famous court case in Richland County, OH where George Grubaugh had purchased a note, and, after George's death, Jonathan (who received the note after George died) used it to purchase a horse and saddle. It turns out the note was not collectible, and the seller of the horse and saddle sued Jonathan to recover the funds. The case was tried in 1818 which led many researchers to believe George died in 1818, but if you look at the transcript of the case, George had died had much earlier and the horse sale, itself, took place sometime close to 1814.

I would prefer to use the 1813 death date for George although I am not sure where the oxcart information comes from. George is currently not listed as fighting in the War of 1812.

There is a document listed in Fold-3 where George Grubaugh is claiming to have served in the War of 1812 and is requesting a land grant as compensation for his service. This document, however, was filed in 1858 and several witnesses attest to George being alive. The claim was denied and George is not listed on the company roster of the unit he was supposed associated with. It is not known if the claim is a hoax or if George's death in 1813 never occurred.
