ELDERLY SHAMOKIN RESIDENT EXPIRES

Archibald H. Allvord, 85, of 124 West Mulberry Street, widely known rug weaver, died Saturday evening [January 26] in Northumberland County Institutional District Hospital, Trevorton Road, following a brief illness. Mr. Allvord was transferred to the county hospital following a 10-day stay it Shamokin. Hospital.

Born in Burnside November 1, 1861 [sic], Mr. Allvord was a son of the late Jacob and Rebecca Allvord. He attended school in Burnside several years before going to work as a breaker boy in a Shamokin area colliery. He resided in Burnside approximately 20 years.

Mr. Allvord last worked at the former Henry Clay Colliery as a fireman, a position he held 20 years before the mining operation was closed.

A carpet weaver, Mr. Allvord practiced the trade approximately 65 years. He manufactured rugs in his home until one year ago, carrying on a business begun in the Shamokin area more than a century ago by Mr. and Mrs. John S. Schwartz, deceased. The business is being continued now by a son-in-law, Herbert Albright, Shamokin.

The late local resident was a charter member of Trinity Evangelical Church and the Brotherhood of Andrew and Phillip of that church. Mr. Allvord was a member of the Modern Woodmen of the World, also.

He was married in Shamokin December 19, 1893, to the former Miss Ellen Schwartz. Mrs. Allvord died five years ago.

Survivors include a son, Walter, Cleveland, Ohio; four daughters, Mrs. Clarence Pike, Akron, Ohio; Mrs. Kimber Erdman, Port Orange. Fla.; Mrs. Willis McCoy, Shamokin, and Mrs. Herbert Albright, Shamokin; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

During the past 17 years, Mr. Allvord resided with a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Albright, 124 West Mulberry Street.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 in Farrow Funeral Home, Sixth and Chestnut Streets. Rev. Earl D. Ehrig, pastor of Trinity Evangelical Church, will officiate. He will be assisted by Rev. James Reed, pastor of the Reformed Church, Harrisburg, and Rev. Russell Fry, pastor of Trevorton Baptist Church, grandsons of the deceased.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery….
