NOTE below: In the 1850 Census, Elizabeth was listed as age 6 in the household headed by her recently-widowed mother, Mary Ann Carroll. Complicating matters, part of the family (mother and 2 children) were listed at the bottom of one census page, and the others at the top of the next page. Inexplicably, there is an Eli aged 7 on the earlier page, and an Elizabeth age 6 on the later page, but there is another Eli, age 1, on the second page. It is illogical that there would have been two children named Eli. Further complicating matters, as of 1-6-2023, familysearch.org indexes the 1-year-old Eli as "Elizabeth." But, of course, it is just as illogical that there would have been two children both named Elizabeth. Given the fact that the family's listing was divided on two pages, the problem may be attributable to a copying error by the census enumerator, who could have made a mistake in copying from a work sheet to the final sheets. If the 6-year-old listed as Elizabeth should have been listed even then as "Abi" (perhaps for Abigail?) that could explain the entire problem.

But by the 1860 census, the then-17-year-old was called "Abi."
