Margaret Marie Sabin Grand Ledge Margaret Marie "Maggie" Sabin, age 74, formerly of Portland, passed away December 30, 2008. Maggie was a dear friend to all and will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her. Margaret was born on December 12, 1934, in St. Louis, MI to John and Meta (Kruger) Fisher. She grew up in the Alma and St. Louis area and at the age of 17, married Harry Jo Sabin at the St. Louis Zion Lutheran Church. The couple then started their lives together at the Naval Academy in Newport, RI, and continued on to Key West, FL, eventually returning to the Michigan area. For over thirty years, Maggie worked as a part time school bus driver for the Portland School district and eventually became a full time mail carrier for the United States Postal Service covering the Portland area. Maggie spent many years not only delivering mail to residents on her routes, but also made an effort to extend a helping hand to those who needed assistance. She enjoyed the friendship and camaraderie of close friends, coworkers and first time acquaintances. She enjoyed having guests at her home, reminiscing and sharing stories about past life events. Maggie spent her retirement years volunteering her love and time to different organizations in the local area. She spent many weekends volunteering for dinners at the Portland VFW hall where she and Harry had been members throughout their life together. She was an active volunteer with local seniors, donating her time at the Grand Ledge Independence Village Retirement Community as well as participating in Meals on Wheels for the Eaton County area. Her love of people and especially children, led her to become active in the Potterville Country Mill Apple Orchard, where she volunteered for school sponsored tours and played Mrs. Santa Claus on occasion for the children's entertainment. Maggie was also an active member of the Lansing Shepherd of the Hills Evangelical Lutheran Church. Maggie is survived by her three children: Menita (Steve) Merrill of Fenwick, Brent (Mary) Sabin of Grand Ledge, and John (Kathy) Sabin of St. Johns; six grandchildren: Mickey Merrill, Mandy (Sabin) Sigman, Lynette (Merrill) Gorman, Brad Sabin, Mitchell Sabin, and Rebecca Sabin; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Helen Olney and husband. Open visitation will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at Shepherd of the Hills Evangelical Lutheran Church, 7740 West St. Joseph Hwy., Lansing, MI, with a memorial service to follow at 2:00 p.m., with the Pastor Norman Burger officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to the Peters & Murray Funeral Home of Grand Ledge. Contributions in Maggie's name can be made to the charity of your choice. www.petersandmurrayfuneralhome.com
