Born in Peckville, he was the son of the late Egisto and Assunta Degli-Esposito Merli. He was a graduate of Blakely High School and attended the University of Scranton. He was proud of his service in the Marine Corps, where he served as a drill instructor during the Korean War. He was employed as a contractor and a home builder. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Peckville. He was a member of the Valley View School Board.
A lifelong hunter and fisherman, he was a founding member of the Blue Ridge Rod and Gun Club. He was a standout football player for Blakely Bears and an outstanding baseball player in the Olyphant and Starucca leagues. He enjoyed spending the winter months in south Florida and was an avid follower of his grandchildren's sporting events.
Also surviving are sons, Allan Merli and wife, Joann, Jessup; Ricky Merli and wife, Dorie, Peckville; and Brendan Tomaino and wife, Jennifer, Crystal Lake; a daughter, Lisa Larioni and husband, Greg, Syracuse, N.Y.; grandchildren, Tim, Lauren and Christopher Merli; Greg and Paige Larioni; and Christian Tomaino; nieces and nephews; sister, Emma Antenori, Peckville; and his former wife, Janet Topon Neyman, Blakely.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Joseph Merli; and three brothers, Chester, Gino and Nicholas Merli.
The funeral will be Wednesday from the James M. Margotta Funeral Home, 1019 Main St., Peckville, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Peckville.
