Camiel De Volder was born in Belgium to parents Carl De Volder and Melanie Verplates. About 1896 he and Emma Staes got married and subsequently, in 1902, immigrated to the United States. They decided to reside in the Quad Cities area and he worked as a plow repairer and farmer. He and his wife had four children; Alice (who was born in Belgium), Adolph, Clara, and Edna (all of whom were born in the United States).
