Andree S. Van Dyke

March 5, 1926 - September 20, 2016

Andree Solange Caillaud Van Dyke, age 90, of Selbyville, DE, passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at the Laurelwood Nursing Home in Elkton, MD.
Andree was born on March 5, 1926 in Bordeaux, France to the late Vallantine Caillaud and Louis Revel. She grew up in the Bordeaux/Dordogne area of France and during World War II, she attended a girl’s school. To keep the girls safe from the war, the students were relocated to a renovated castle in southern France until the war was over. She talked many times about those school days in the castle.

After the war Andree lived and worked in Paris and Bordeaux with her family. During later trips to France she would often talk of riding her motorbike through the streets of Paris and Bordeaux like a pro-racer.

Andree met John Van Dyke while he was stationed at the military base in Bordeaux and they were soon married. The family moved from France to the United States in 1958 as John continued his career in the US Army. The family relocated to several bases near Fort Hood, Texas, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and Aberdeen, Maryland. During John’s service in the Vietnam War, Andree was one of the thousands of waiting wives who raised and cared for their families while the spouse served the country.

In 1965, Andree became a US citizen and continued working in numerous service and restaurant jobs. As a waitress, hostess, bartender, Andree worked at several businesses in the Rising Sun area, including, Chantilly Country Club, Wesley’s, Lafayette Inn, and several others. She was quick to make friends and became popular with her many customers and employers. Upon her retirement in 1997, she and John moved to Selbyville Delaware to their retirement home.

Andree is survived by her children: Christine Miller (Russ) of Rising Sun, MD, Geraldine Long (Robert) of Chesapeake Beach, MD, Albert Van Dyke of Charlestown, MD, and Steve Van Dyke (Kim) of Milford, DE; grandsons: Shawn Miller (Wendy), Shane Miller (Tara), Robert Long III (Melissa), Michael Long (Megan), Kyle Van Dyke; great grandchildren: Shawn Hunter, Jordan Miller, Adam Miller, Sierra Miller, Robert Long IV, Mia Long; brothers: Roland Revel (Yugette), Robert Revel (Nicole); and her sister, Christina DeGabrael (Pascal); and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Andree was preceded in death by her husband John Van Dyke; brothers: Christian Revel and Bernard Revel; sister, Marie Revel; her grand-daughter Dawn Long Hill, and daughter-in-law Carolyn Baughman.
