Son of Wm. D. & Martha Brown Sledge. Maternal grandfather of actress Tallulah Bankhead. Joshua was the father of daughter, Ada Sledge who married Wm Bankhead on Jan. 31, 1900 in Shelby Co. Tn. To this union was born two daughters, Eugenia and Tallulah. Tallulah became a famous screen star during the 1920's and 30's. Joshua Thomas Sledge came from a rich family from the tide waters of Virginia. They were famous for fighting cocks that they raised and they named them "Sledge Hammers." The family lived in Como, Mississippi and Memphis where they had cotton factories. Joshua's wife died soon after Ada's birth. Ada was raised by her father, governesses and mammies.
