Leo Warren Anselm passed away peacefully in his home on November 7, 2016 after a 5-month battle with cancer. Leo was born in Bloomington, IL to Leo Water Anselm and Anna Bernice Pressley. He lived in Ferguson, MO and Webster Groves, MO before moving to Van Nuys, CA in 1954. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Reseda, where he attended Reseda High and then Cleveland High where he was in the graduating class of 1960.

Like most young men Leo had many jobs. In Webster Groves, he sold newspapers on a street corner. In Reseda, he delivered newspapers on his bicycle. Later he washed dishes in a place called Coffee Dan's. He stocked shelves at a liquor store, and worked at Murmac Hardware store as a sales clerk. About that time he got engaged to a very lovely girl named Kathleen Martin, and seeing that he needed something more stable, he applied for and received a job working for U.S. post office in Reseda as a letter carrier. Leo and Kathy got married in February, 1962. He decided more income was necessary and took a job with Adohr Farms driving a wholesale milk truck to stores, schools, and restaurants. This job paid very well, with all of the teamster benefits. He was up at 2 AM daily to pull his route, which really got in the way of family life. So he then found a job with Farmer Brothers Coffee in North Hollywood as a route salesman, which had more reasonable hours and similar pay.

Leo stayed with Farmers bros coffee for two years and loved the job but still knew that the potential for higher income at Farmers Bros. was too low for his expectations. He studied for and passed the California State Insurance license exam in early 1968. He became a licensed solicitor working under C.W. Tommy Thompson, while also working full time at Farmers Bros Coffee. His plan was to be appointed as an agent with State Farm Insurance. He completed their pre-contract training in summer of 1968 and was appointed 9/1/1968. This turned into a 40 year career in the town of Newhall. He had a fun and rewarding career, meeting local business people and many of the local citizens of early Newhall. He was blessed!

Leo's life was filled with many blessings. His two daughters, Brenda and Beverly, were his greatest joy. Sadly, his daughter Brenda passed away at the age of 32 from cancer. He looks forward to seeing her in heaven.

Leo later married Linda Hertel and their marriage and partnership has lasted 28 years. Leo and Linda share nine grandkids. They spent quality time with their grandkids doing many fun things, such as snow skiing in Mammoth, trips to Lake Powell, camping at Convict Lake, sleepovers in the backyard, and much more.

Leo was an outdoorsman and loved physical activities. He was an avid runner and he completed 5 marathons throughout his life. He enjoyed hiking, bicycling and riding his Harley. He climbed Mt. Whitney 5 times, and several of the other "fourteener" mountains. At the age of 67, he climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro which is the world's highest free standing mountain. He was very active in the Masonic Fraternity and was a member of Old West Masonic Lodge 813 for 46 years. He was a Scottish Rite member and a Shriner. Leo is survived by his wife and life partner of 28 years Linda Anselm of Santa Clarita, daughter and son-in-law Beverly and Riel Johnson of Santa Clarita, his sister Elenora Anselm of Santa Clarita, and his grandchildren Robert Breiner, David Breiner, Taylor LeBlanc, Conor LeBlanc, Cody McLean, David Hertel, Hannah Hertel, James Johnson and Eric Johnson. He was preceded in death by his daughter Brenda Anselm Breiner (11/16/1997) and his brother Ronald Anselm. His family and many friends will dearly miss his fun and energetic spirit that made him so unique and special.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at 10am at Eternal Valley Memorial Park, 23287 Sierra Highway, Newhall, CA 91321.
