This replacement stone has been erected between the two original headstones of his first wife, Mary Shatswell, and his second wife, Martha H. Hubbard.

Joshua was born 22 Sep 1779 at Hamilton, Essex, MA, and baptized 3 Oct 1779 in Ipswich, Essex, MA, the son of George and Mary (Cleaves) Dodge. (Massachusetts Town and Vital Records, Dodge Family of Essex County, p.89) He and and his first wife, Mary Shatswell, filed their intentions to be married on 3 Feb 1809, and were married 28 Feb 1809 in Ipswich. They had at least three children, all born in Haverhill, Essex, MA; Nathaniel Shatswell Dodge, b. 10 Jan 1810, Mary Elizabeth Dodge, b. 11 Sep 1811, and George Cleaves Dodge, b. 24 Dec 1816, d. 7 Jul 1817.

Another possible child of theirs, Lydia Ann Brown, is buried two places to the left of Mary and three to the left of Joshua. To Lydia's left is her husband, Shadrach Brown.

After his first wife's death in 1829, Joshua married Martha H. Hubbard on 18 Apr 1831 in Sandwich.

Joshua and Martha are found in the 1850 Federal census in Moultonborough, NH. Probate filings show that Joshua was decreed insane in 1856/57, and his (presumed) son-in-law, Shadrach Brown, was appointed his guardian. Joshua is found in the 1860 Federal census in Concord, NH, as an inmate in the insane asylum there. He has the date 1856 by his name, and "clergyman" listed as an occupation.

His death notice was published 6 Apr 1861 in the Mirror and Farmer (Manchester, NH), page 3: "In Concord, Mar 25, at the Asylum for the Insane, Rev. Joshua Dodge, several years in the ministry, age 81 yrs. He had been an inmate of the Asylum since September 22, 1859."
