Andreas Wälchli, son of Johann Ulrich Wälchliand Anna Barbara Wälchli, was born April 20, 1835, in Wyssbach, Bern, Switzerland and was christened in Madiswil. He was the sixth and youngest child in the family. Andreas wasn’t quite thirteen years old when his father died, and he was twenty-five when his mother died.
He was a schreinermaster (a master cabinet maker and joiner) and he made furniture. Andreas was also a security policeman and on duty for fire catastrophes in Bern.
On December 22, 1876, Andreas married Elise Caroline Zimmermann in Bern. They became the parents of eight children: Caroline, Ernst, Otto, Robert, Hans, Fritz, Paul (who died at five months), and Paul Andrew.
While on duty in February 1888, Andreas caught pneumonia and died shortly afterwards. His death came five months before Paul Andrew was born on July 24. Andreas was buried in Bern.
In November 1888, at her unmarried brother’s request, Elise brought her seven living children to the United States where he could help her care for them.
