Capt. Hauck was killed before a crowd of 90,000 when his Northrop T-38 Talon suffered engine failure during a low approach while performing with the Thunderbirds at an air show at Hill Air Force Base in Utah.USAFA Class 0f 1971

Capt. Hauck refused to eject when instructed to do so by the safety officer because of the large crowds of people below him. He perished in the jet to save the lives of the numerous spectators watching the air show. He was truly a hero.
