Ronald Douglas Keyandwy passed away suddenly on June 3, 2016 at his home in Wadsworth, Ohio. Ron was born on July 14, 1963 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Donald “Big Indian” Keyandwy and Betty Cogan who resides in Harrison with her husband Dennis Cogan. Ron lived most of his life in Westland, Michigan where he met the love of his life Jody (Hanser) Keyandwy and they wed on September 6, 2002 at which time he became the father of Jeffrey Jarrard and Jessica Jarrard (Cooper) Shadlowsky.

Ron leaves behind his loving siblings, Linda (Jeff) Young, Leona Santure, Dawn Keyandwy, the late Robert “Robbie” Keyandwy and his wife Kelly, Robin (Wade Kovach) Keyandwy, Richard (Jane West) Pierson, Jennifer (Frankie Banks) and Jill (Bill Koehler) Parrino. He and Jody were especially close to his Uncle Gene and Aunt Joann Bell Keyandwy and their daughter Sandra Jo (Jeffery) Regnier.

He also will be sadly missed by his many loving nieces, nephews and cousins who adored him and so many life-long friends many of which celebrated his life with a barbeque in this honor which was held at Ron & Jody’s chalet located in Greenwood Township, Harrison, Michigan. Also attending were the relatives of wife Jody to include mother-in-law Elaine Gilsbach Hanser and sister Karen Hanser Burke to name a few. They both loved to spend vacations at the chalet and boating and fishing.

Two of the favorite fishing spots were at Higgins Lake and probably best loved was Torch Lake which was close to his brother Rick (Jane) Pierson’s home in East Jordan and his “Dad” Richard Pierson’s home in Central Lake, Michigan. Even though his mom and Richard Pierson divorced, Ron maintained a loving relationship with him throughout his life. They often took their motor home and camped out at both places to enjoy each other’s company. Beside from fishing and boating, Ron loved music - the louder the better. He also mastered the card game of euchre. His handle online was King Kong HEHEHE. That also tells you that he loved to make people laugh.

Ron was proud of his native American Indian heritage and was the 3rd great grandson of Pierre Kiwandaway, Chief of the Pottawatomie Tribe who migrated around 1840 to St. Ignace, Mackinac County, Michigan and 2nd great grandson of Joseph Kewandaway who is considered one of the original elders of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. Joseph and his wife Josette Goudreau Kewandaway are buried at the Gros Cap Cemetery in Mackinac County, Michigan. According to Gros Cap records, 1961, states “Joseph Kewandaway was Chippewa Indian. He was the son of Pierre (Peter) and Margaret (Abbott) Kewandaway and was born in 1849. In a notebook kept by the Blanchard family it states “Joe was the son of a Chief of the Pottawatomie and was poisoned by bad medicine.” His mother, Margaret Abbott, was the daughter of Samuel Abbott who was a prominent citizen and mayor of what is now called Mackinac Island. Samuel Abbott is buried in a crypt in the Catholic cemetery on the Island.

Ron spend most of his life in the Westland area and after high school he attended and graduated from Truck Driving School. He became employed by Yellow Freight on May 20, 1995. When Yellow was bought out by YRC Worldwide in 2002 in order to remain employed he moved to Ohio. In 2010, Ron received the “One Million Mile Safe Driving Award” which is presented to drivers who achieve one million miles without an accident or ticket. Along with his plaque from YRC, he received letters of recognition from the Ohio State Senate and the Ohio House of representatives. Since his award in 2010, he drove another 500,000+ accident/ticket free miles. He received 2 recognitions of achievement for every ten years of service for YRC.

When I asked his wife Jody what she wanted me to write about Ron, she said just tell everyone that he was a good, good man.
